The potential return of Gulfsands Petroleum to Syria’s upstream sector highlights a key issue on how to responsibly and sustainably rebuild Syria’s energy industry in compliance with international regulations.

Gulfsands Managing Director John Bell was interviewed by Nader Itayim and Rithika Krishna of Argus Media yesterday. They discussed the comnpany’s plan to return to Syria’s upstream as soon as sanctions on the country are lifted and “circumstances allow.

The reconstruction of Syria’s energy sector is a monumental challenge, but it is also a vital necessity for the country’s recovery. A reliable and affordable energy supply is crucial for economic stabilization and humanitarian support. However, the historic international sanctions remain a fundamental obstacle, preventing the investment and expertise needed to rebuild critical infrastructure.

Gulfsands has consistently maintained its intention to resume operations in Syria when circumstances allow, ensuring that energy revenues benefit the Syrian people, rather than the black market. The unlawful operation of oil fields has diverted billions in revenue, depriving the country of resources essential for rebuilding.

This collaboration will be key to restoring Syria’s indigenous energy sector, meeting the country’s urgent demand for fuel, and driving economic revival.
